You might need to reinstall macOS on your Apple Configurator workstation or migrate to a new workstation. Here’s how to make sure you can continue to supervise the same iOS devices.
If you are using AppleConfigurator older than 2.X you will not be able to activate supervised/non supervised devices completely if they are to bu updated to iOS10.3.X or if they are already running this version. Old Apple Configurator may be the cause here. I would try updating AC if possible. Apple Configurator 1.7.2 is a recommended update for all Apple Configurator users. This update is available from the Updates pane of the Mac App Store. About Configurator To create or install an iOS configuration profile, use Apple Configurator or a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution like Profile Manager (included with OS X Server).
Back up your data
Before you reinstall macOS or move to a new workstation, back up your Apple Configurator 2 data:
- On your workstation, open Apple Configurator 2.
- From the Apple Configurator 2 menu, choose Preferences.
- Click Organizations.
- Select your organization, click , then choose Export Organization.
- Enter a password to secure the organization file.
- Enter a filename and a location to save the file, then click Save.

Keep the organization file in a secure location until you are ready to restore your data.
Restore your data
When you reinstall macOS or set up your new workstation, follow these steps to import your organization data:
- On your workstation, open Apple Configurator 2.
- From the Apple Configurator 2 menu, choose Preferences.
- Click Organizations.
- Select your organization, click , then choose Import Organization.
- Select the organization file that you saved, then click Import.
- Enter the password that you used to secure the file, then click Submit.
Now you can continue to supervise devices that were set up on the original workstation.
Back up other data
If you need to preserve other data, like Blueprints or iOS software images, back up and restore these folders:
Blueprints or iOS software images
~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/
Preferences
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator.ui/
Device backups
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Hi I'm all of a sudden unable to build any iOS device as it pops up with 'download activation record failed' followed by 'bad URL' the full error is
When I take the Macbook and said ipads off site all works fine, able to download activation record and builds/images as expected, Soon as you get back in school it fails.
The only thing that has changed recently is the county web filter (I'm in Lancashire, school has OCL/BT Lancs as their ISP), I can access the app store after allowing *.apple.com, I suppose the question I've got to is does anyone know what the URL's need to be allowed in order to build an iOS device?
Thanks
